Students who elect to join the Solar Car Team take part in one of the largest, most prestigious, and well-respected student organizations at the University of Michigan. The Solar Car Team members hail from diverse academic backgrounds ranging from the College of Engineering, the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, the College of Literature Science and the Arts, and even the School of Art and Design. The initiative and dedication of the team members is essential to the success of the project. Team members handle all aspects of creating each new cutting-edge vehicle. Building a new vehicle for each race cycle allows the team members to experience first-hand the complexity of the entire process of a project cycle, from preliminary component designs to the finish line. It also naturally offers students many leadership opportunities as older team members leave; it is up to the remaining students to fill the old members' roles.

The legacy of excellence left by the team alumni has distinguished the University of Michigan Solar Car Team to be the most successful solar car team in North America. This year the team is focused on winning the World Solar Challenge, the premier solar car race in the world. If we win, we will be the first American team to win the world race since GM won the inaugural race in 1987.
