Scrutineering Update

Infinium arrived with the semi trailer on Tuesday afternoon, shortly after when race officials publicized time slots for scrutineering. We were scheduled for Thursday (Today) at 2:30 PM, giving us all of Wednesday to make final preparations for the inspection. On Wednesday morning, we swapped out many of our mechanical parts for our race set of parts--each part we design has a given fatigue life, so after over 3,500 miles of testing, many were in need of changing. After swapping out these components, we gave the car a shakedown by running some laps around the Hidden Valley Raceway track. We were impressed by Infinium's speed around the track, and feel that it should qualify much better than Continuum did.

On Wednesday evening, we enjoyed dinner with the group of parents and team supporters led by Chuck Hutchins (Chuck is following the team on his sixteenth race, and we are the ninth team that he has traveled with!). It is great to have such an enthusiastic group of supporters here, and a pleasure to have so many team parents around. After dinner, half of the team returned to the race track to prepare for scrutineering, including the installation of our concentrator system. Up until this point, we had been running without concentrators in Darwin, so no team had seen our new development in person. Many who had heard about the system had yet to see it, so the time for the unveiling of the system was near.

Today's scrutineering was set up in a number of different stations, including stops to inspect items such as logos and numbering, array size, vehicle weight, mechanical, electrical, batteries, and support vehicles. After having each team member sign in, we lined up behind the cars that were already scrutineering so that we could proceed through the stations one by one. We had no major problems during scrutineering, and have only two minor changes to make before our vehicle is cleared for qualifying: first of all, we must make a slight modification to our parking brake mechanism, and secondly, we must re-locate a switch that isolates the battery pack from the rest of the vehicle. We feel confident that we can make both changes tomorrow, so that all of our systems will comply with race regulations and will be ready to qualify on Saturday.

Go Blue!

What a great blog. I've never heard of solar cars before, or races to create and test them. But it sounds great. Keep having fun, and save the envrionment.
Has Michigan qualified yet.
Has Michigan qualified yet. Anyone know. Are they having problems with the break or the switch.

Keep the great up dates and comments coming. I can't tell you how many times I heard people say that Michigan's blog was the most informative and up to date of any (especially NASC's) in 08. Concentrators look sweet btw. (@Dowling they better be perfectly focused 100% of the time, no more forgetting to write out a time to angle table every morning)

Hey TCLambert, Are there any plans out there to do another friendfeed page like for WSC? Seemed to be an easy way to setup a one stop shop for race information and details. Jose

THAT IS SO COOL! I just showed my CPV coworkers at Skyline Solar and they're very proud of all that you've done. Very good work. I also saw the little block "M" that you have in the mirror supports. Purely structural I'm sure.
Everyone knows that the Block
Everyone knows that the Block M is one of the strongest structures known to man.

At this point, Umicore, Team Nuon, Solar Team Twente, both of Bochum's cars, and Principia have passed scrutineering. That's some of the top contenders right there, so we're gonna have a fine race. Still haven't heard how MIT or Stanford fared in the inspections. They should do fine. Team Aurora should pass inspection soon, too, with their two cars.

Team Nuon reports that Nuna5 passed scrutineering. What with their big crash, that is a great accomplishment. Solar Team Twente had heard a rumor that Nuna5 had NOT passed, but that appears not to be the case. Maybe on first look the scrutineers found a problem or two that Team Nuon fixed quickly. Team Nuon also said their car is only 1.2 pounds heavier after all the repairs. In earlier testing, they said their car has a top speed of 145 kph (90 mph). It will be interesting to see who can put up the fastest lap times and earn first starting position.

I'm sure Nuon will be at the top of their game, though probably a little tired from doing repairs in Australia. I want to see some pics of the now-not-secret concentrator design!

Woah, they look awesome- I like the huge mirror next to the driver the most, easily 40x or more on that one! They will have to be careful at midday media stops not to melt the cells- is it legal to have a giant fan on the whole car while it charges?
Oh parking brake woes. I know
Oh parking brake woes. I know them all too well and they are horrible! I'm sure you're system is far superior to mine, though.

Congratulations on a nice looking car. TC has been doing a great job of research but I have found an additional resource to check out. Another American team, Principia College has updated their website www.prin.edu/solar to include an entire new WSC (Green Global Challenge) webpage including live GPS tracking and interactive map, links to their live radio program (3:30pm CST, Oct. 20-23 & 25-29), downloadable podcasts if you can't listen live, a competitors link with many of the competing team's websites linked and translated to english (just click on team name), photos, team, and tabs at bottom to additional information including their updates page which is in a similar format to this site (with an ability to post comments back to the team). Hoping that everyone finds this as interesting as it was to me.

Hey, Principia! I wasn't sure if you would be at WSC, but I'm glad to see you've made it! Let's sweep this thing for the USA!

Yes Brian... you can only imagine the joy in my heart and soul the day I took a dremel tool to those things :) Having the fairing windows on and working doesn't hurt the looks, either. Andy
